Columns A to G is the result of our indexing the lists. Columns H to J reflect the reconciliation work with the published bases, Mémorial de la Shoah and Yad Vashem.
Column A : Number: we have kept the sequential numbers of the inmates in the original documents so as to ease reverting to the sources. In practice, we started with the USHMM list, the inmate numbers are left unchanged, they are smaller that 1.000. The first copybook of the Pau list has been indexed in the 1.000 to 1.999 range, the second Pau copybook between 2.000 and 2.999 range, the 3 last digits being the sequential number. Similarly, the Rivesaltes list is in the 3000 series. The names in the Pau and Rivesaltes lists have been spelled in CAPITALS. Because the various lists are not organized in the same way, the same sequential number, e.g. 45, 2045 and 3045, corresponds to fully unrelated persons. The series are not continuous, because there are unreadable portions (basically USHMM and Rivesaltes lists) and because some Pau list inmates have been “sifted” out.
Column B :Names: italicized names are those that could not be deciphered initially. They have been corrected in order to be Excel-manipulable.
Column C : Given name: no comment. Column D : Birth date: in the 1.000 and 2.000 series where the age appears in column E, if a birth date shows up in column D it originates in the published data bases. Thus the line pertains to a deportee whose convoy number appears in column H, Fate. Dates are dd/mm/yyyy
Column E : Age: Within a +/- 1 year range, the birth year is 1943 minus the age. Column F : Nationality: viz. the abbreviations in the table below.
Column G : Origin: as regards the Pau lists (numbers in column A in the 1.000 and 2.000 series) this column contains the Département code or the abbreviation of the place or camp of origin. As regards the USHMM list (numbers in column A smaller than 999) the number points to the corresponding entry in the Pau or Rivesaltes list.
Column H : Fate: either the number of the convoy from Drancy to camp, or “&” showing a duplicate entry. In the latter case, revert to the corresponding entry from the USHMM list. If this entry is not in a nearby line, a search aid might appear in column I, Corrections. If column H is void, it shows that the individual’s fate is unknown.
Column I : Corrections: in case of discrepancy with our inputs, shows names and/or dates as in the Klarsfeld Mémorial. PT stands for a Page of Testimony in the Yad Vashem database, GB (Gedenkbuch) a list of German or Austrian deportees.
Column J : Remarks: as required. Letter “x” is a flag used for extracting persons with “fate unknown”.
