Camp of Rieucros

The Rieucros camp

• Department and territory : Lozere (48) on the commune of Mende.
  

• Period of activity : Opened on January 21st 1939, became a camp for women in October 1939, closed in March 1942.
  

• Size : 14 barracks, and two stonewall buildings.
  

• Capacity : In June 1940, 570 women and 42 children.
  

• Category : Successively "Special housing center", concentration camp, repressive camp.
  

• Populations : the unwanted placed in forced residency, here the residency is a camp, the first to be interned were illegal women. They are quickly joined by Spanish Republicans women, anti-fascist activist from central Europe, Gypsies, and French communists and anarchist women. From 1940 foreign unwanted and anti-nazis Jewish women.
